INDIE FILMMAKERS … Do you have an awesome film, music video or web series? Celebrate Diversity in Film with New York City’s WINTER FILM AWARDS, a BEST REVIEWED FEST on FilmFreeway!

Winter Film Awards is New York City — showcasing the eclectic diversity and excitement of the independent arts world. The Fest celebrates the outstanding work of emerging filmmakers in all genres from around the world, with an emphasis on highlighting underrepresented artists. Works of all lengths are considered for Festival screening, including narrative Fiction, Documentary, Web Series, Music Videos, Animation and Horror. All selected films are screened at New York City’s best independent cinema.

Emerging filmmakers with low budgets and no connections are so often ignored in favor of the standard big budget generic action films. Exciting low-budget films are created all over the world; we need the opportunity to see them!

All selected films are screened at Cinema Village, NYC’s best indie cinema.

Winter Film Awards is an all-volunteer women and minority-run 501(c)3 organization founded in 2011. We believe everyone deserves a fair shot at getting their voice heard and we have a rigorous blind judging process to ensure a bias-free review. Winter Film Awards is proudly a Best Reviewed Festival on FilmFreeway.

WINTER FILM AWARDS challenges the local community to create a 4-7 minute short film in a specified genre, tagline and prop in just a single gonzo weekend! Thirty teams of the most creative people in the tri-state area have just 48 sleepless hours to decide what they are going to do, write a screenplay, assemble props, costumes and actors, rehearse, shoot, score and edit their film. Students, amateurs, and seasoned industry veterans alike learn the importance of caffeine, team work and time management in successful filmmaking.

For the 2012 Challenge, teams had to contend with a large brightly-colored snowflake sugar cookie and a tagline from Fight Club. For the 2013 Challenge, we made it even more difficult — Teams had a tagline from Ghostbusters and Gray Line New York provided each team with one-hour private shooting time on a double-decker sightseeing tour bus, complete with Tour Guide and Driver. Visit the WFA YouTube playlist to view all of the amazing films.

The 2014 WFA 48-Hour Film Challenge gets under way on Friday November 7 at 8pm. A representative from each team must come to our offices at 419 Lafayette Street, New York NY 10003 at 8pm to sign in to the Challenge. Entries may be shot either via traditional filmmaking equipment or teams can do the whole thing on smartphones. There is no fee to participate in the challenge, but teams must pre-register to ensure a spot.

Completed films are uploaded to YouTube to garner the coveted “Fan Favorite” vote – for the 2013 Challenge, films received 65k views!

On Friday November 21, the best entries will be screened at Blondies (212 W 79th St, New York NY 10024) followed by an Award Ceremony, awesome prizes and networking party. Over $7k in prizes will be awarded for BEST PICTURE and FAN FAVORITE. Prizes generously provided by B&H Photo, Ride of Fame, Indoor Extreme Sports, The Paint Place, Chelsea Piers, Sleep No More / The McKittrick Hotel, Pole Position Raceway, NY SKYRIDE, City Wine Tours and others!

The 72 Hour Shootout

AsAmFilmLab Low Res

Celebrating diversity and artistic empowerment, the Ninth Annual 72 Hour Film Shootout (“Shootout”) returns this summer under the auspices of and in collaboration with Asian CineVision and is now accepting registrations for this summer’s Shootout competition from filmmakers, actors, writers, directors, etc.

The Shootout is a worldwide competition in which filmmaking teams are given a common theme at the start and then have 72 hours to write, shoot, edit, and complete short films up to five minutes in length. Teams compete for cash, prizes and the chance to have their films screened at the prestigious Asian American International Film Festival (“AAIFF”), now in its 36th year and New York’s leading festival for independent Asian and Asian American film and video, and the first and longest-running U.S. festival of its kind. As an integral part of AAIFF, the Shootout celebrates the creativity and genius of the directors, their casts and crews as they share stories by, about and for Asian Americans and other filmmakers of color with the world. AAIFF has played a vital role in discovering and nurturing such acclaimed talent as Wayne Wang (THE JOY LUCK CLUB), Ang Lee (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN), Mira Nair (THE NAMESAKE), Zhang Yimou (HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS), Christine Choy (WHO KILLED VINCENT CHIN?), Steven Okazaki (THE MUSHROOM CLUB), Jessica Yu (PING PONG PLAYA), and Justin Lin (FAST FIVE).

The competition is open to actors and filmmakers of ALL races, religions and nationalities. It does create a unique opportunity for Asian American filmmakers and other filmmakers of color to demonstrate their talent, gain exposure in the entertainment industry and impact the visibility of Asian American stories and characters in film. One of the Shootout requirements is that at least one key production member (e.g., director, producer or writer) and a principal actor from each team must be of Asian descent.

Deadline for 2013 registration is May 31, 2013! Registration begins March 1st! For more information:
