Casting and Location Call for Short Film “Strawberry Shake” [New York, NY] #casting #filmlocation

Posted May 16, 2018

PLOT SUMMARY: CHARLIE, 28, has bought a pet rabbit and prepared an elaborate dinner for her two young kids RUBY (8) and JACKSON (5) who she has not seen for months. Charlie picks Ruby and Jackson up from their Dad and brings them to the apartment in Brooklyn that she shares with platonic guy friend, JESSE. Though Jackson’s delighted to see his mom, Ruby’s angry, and Charlie tries to win her over. The rabbit is a hit, the kids dress up in costumes, and Jesse entertains. On a high-wire between anxious self-doubt and joyful excitement, Charlie tries to explain to her kids where she’s been, and discovers that telling the truth is tricky, and some things should remain hidden.

SEEKING TALENT
Ruby, 8 (lead, Caucasian)
Charlie’s daughter. A smart, strong-minded girl who is angry at Charlie for her absence. Ruby’s observant and self-possessed. She’s also a bookworm with a good imagination who loves to make up games and make costumes.

Jackson, 5 (lead, Caucasian)
Charlie’s son. A playful boy who takes things in stride. He’s extremely excited to see Charlie and wonders what’s for dessert.

Jesse, 30 (lead, Caucasian)
Charlie’s roommate and friend. He works as an Assistant Manager at a grocery store. Jesse’s got a grin on his face most of the time, and a lot of personal philosophies about life. He wants to help— and does in the end— by making strawberry shakes for dessert.

Pete, 35 (supporting, Caucasian)
Charlie’s ex-husband. He has the look and vibe of a popular professor. Pete meets Charlie at the park to hand off the kids. On the surface he acts kind to Charlie, but deep down he is irritated about having had to watch the kids in Charlie’s absence.

Elise, 19 (supporting, any ethnicity)
Ruby and Jackson’s babysitter, hired in Charlie’s absence by Pete. A college student. It’s unclear whether Elise is just the kids’ babysitter or also Pete’s lover. Elise’s competency with the kids is impressive, and in general, she’s sunny, worldly, and confident, despite her young age.

SEEKING LOCATION
APARTMENT LOCATION
Overall:
• This is an apartment that 2 roommates live in. They are in their late 20s/30.

Economic:
• Neither roommate makes a lot of money, nor do they have any money to fall back on (one character is a divorced mother of two who is currently a bartender, the other character is an Assistant Manager at a grocery store).
• The apartment should look realistic to what 2 people like this could actually afford in NYC (rent about $1800?)
• At the same time, it’s not a bad place, doesn’t have a bad vibe at all- and could even have a pretty good vibe! Just realistic/not perfect/not postcard-like.

Size:
• Not big, but as big as we can get it while it still being believable that the 2 people described above live there.
• The kitchen needs to be big enough so that the main character can fall onto the kitchen floor and her kids can come running in and observe this… but not so big that you would easily put a kitchen table and chairs in it.
• The living room needs to be big enough to hold a small kitchen table for 4 people, as well as a couch and TV area.
• The bedrooms and bathroom could be small.

Specific Features:
• It’s okay if you can see a little bit from the kitchen to the living room, but they shouldn’t be completely open to each other.
• A window in the bedroom, a window in the kitchen are necessary. Windows in the living room would be great, but aren’t strictly necessary.

Aesthetic:
• Comfortable, lofi, lived in, not midcentury modern.
• Thrift store/vintage stuff, comfortable couch, hand-me-downs, used furniture (not
new or expensive furniture), patterns, quilts, plants, creative, idiosyncratic,
random.
• These are people that have taste and creative interests but not a lot of $ and
have tried to make the place cozy but haven’t dedicated too much time to the design.
