The Letters That Guided Us is told through three story lines of William’s life, each has defined both his views on the ordinary world and the relationships that he left behind during his departure.

LEAD: 19-22 Y/O, CAUCASIAN, MALE. James is William’s best friend and “partner in crime”. He accompanies William on his adventures from home, to basic, and to war. James is William’s compass, helps alter William’s opinions on the war, and leads William to his final realization in the conclusion of the film.

SUPPORTING: 19-22, ANY ETHNICITY, MALE. Cliff is a “tough guy type” introduced during basic training and is William’s lead antagonist during basic training. He accompanies James and William in their tour of Vietnam.

SUPPORTING: 45-55 Y/O, CAUCASIAN, MALE. Charles is William’s father and the husband of Rose Warren. His estranged relationship with his son began after a young William caught Charles in an unfaithful relationship. Since then, Charles has reformed and tried to make things right with his son.

SUPPORTING: 19-22 Y/O, CAUCASIAN, FEMALE. Hannah, William’s girlfriend, is one of William’s greatest support systems. She is caring but is not afraid to voice her own opinions. Hannah encourages William to make amends with his father before he exits for basic training.

SUPPORTING: 45-55 Y/O, CAUCASIAN, FEMALE. Rose Warren is the loving mother of William and the devoted wife to Charles. Rose is unaware of the fact that Charles was unfaithful while William was young. After being convinced by Charles, William has kept this from her in efforts to protect her relationship with his father.
TENTATIVE CHARACTER SHOOT DATES: October- 21; November- 5
SUPPORTING: 40-55 Y/O, ANY ETHNICITY, MALE. Sgt. Copper is William’s unapologetic Drill Sergeant during basic training. Sgt. Copper toughens up William’s, James, Cliff, and the rest of the unit in preparation for their time in Vietnam.

SUPPORTING: 25-40 Y/O, ANY ETHNICITY, FEMALE. Mary is an anti war taxi driver who transports William in the Present Day storyline. Think Janis Joplin, but toned down a bit. Although she has polarizing opinions to William, she understands his place in the war and exposes William to the opinions on the homefront.
